Situation

The Corporate Information Systems (CIS) group had recently outsourced many of their legacy system development and operation functions. One of the remaining activities was to be a small, agile group capable of helping the organization in reengineering and other problem-solving situations. Most members of the group had come from an IS background and they felt weak in requisite consulting skills. Fu
rther, there was no approach or methodology to process improvement.

Approach

As the group formed, Kendall Consulting Group worked with group members to create a customized business process reengineering (business change) methodology. The approach was modular and many of the approach elements could be used on simpler business changes as well. Further, after understanding the group's skill base, a management education program was developed.

Key Value

KCG has extensive experience in business process reengineering (two of KCG's founding partners worked with Jim Champy and Mike Hammer -- leaders in reengineering). They were able to translate this knowledge into an approach for this company and for the skills of the internal consultants. KCG's expertise in executive education and coaching of new consultants also enabled them to create and deliver a powerful program for the internal consulting staff.

Results

The CIS business process consultants are now fully educated and applying the new methodology. One application of the approach to a product development effort was cited as shortening the development time by over 30%. Further, the internal consultants are increasingly skilled and able to deliver value on a wide range of consulting engagements. The ideas and concepts presented in the consulting education program was instrumental in their success.
