Babson College - F. W. Olin School
MIS 7550 Deploying IT Strategically Fall 1998
Assignment for Class 11 November 16, 1998
Note: Our schedule for the remainder of the course will be as follows:
Class #12 Nov. 30. "Organizational Change & Project Mgt."
(originally class #9)
Class #13 Dec. 7 "Multiple Issues and Corporate Mobilization"
For class #11, read the case ("Teradyne")
and three articles
for this class, "The IT Function: Planning and Governance" in the
coursepack, pp. 273-325.
Our visitor will be John McCabe, Vice President, Teradyne.
Be prepared to discuss the case and present your answers to the following questions:
- What are the key factors in Teradynes business, organization and culture, and in
the history of Teradynes I/S management, which led to the I/S strategic planning effort?
- Evaluate the I/S strategic planning process at Teradyne. Why did it take so long?
How well does it address the needs for a balanced "federal" organization described
in the Hodgkinson article? How well does it address the requirements for successful I/S
described in the Feeny and Willcox article?
- Looking at the case Exhibit 7, "Five-element tables showing long term goals and
targets", pick the three "focused means" you think I/S at Teradyne will
have the most difficulty achieving by the deadline indicated. Be prepared to explain
your choices.
- What questions, predictions, and recommendations would you have for John McCabe and
at the time of the completion of the I/T Strategy at the end of 1993?
- In general, what is the value to a company of developing and having an "
I/T Strategy"? What are the issues, downsides, and risks to developing and having
an I/T Strategy?
